TIGERSTYLE: Creative music making project

Wed 03 Mar 2010

March 2010 - March 2011 // 6pm-8pm every Thursday

Tigerstyle is a new youth music project with a unique focus on producing contemporary urban music, allowing young people to express themselves creatively and to develop their own original compositions into a live band performance.

Students will be provided with a basic knowledge and understanding of music making and encouraged to develop an appreciation for a wide range of urban music genres such as hip hop, breakbeat, dubstep, house, UK garage/grime, RnB, bhangra, reggaeton, drum n bass and dancehall, all of which make use of the various compositional and recording skills that will be taught. Students will be encouraged to develop their own individual musical talents whilst being urged to increase their appreciation for the skills of other individuals in a group based setting.

Participants will engage in a series of clear and simple modules, teaching them computer software commonly associated with the production of urban/electronic music and general music recording (e.g. Steinberg Wavelab, Sony Acid and Steinberg Sequel). The main focus of the programme will be on teaching Steinberg Cubase, and two modules will be presented on Sibelius 6. Students will also be taught how to use hardware sampling workstation synthesisers such as Roland Fantom G6 and Korg M3

From composing their final piece on Steinberg Cubase, then translating elements of their original Cubase project and composing further using Sibelius, students will work with young instrumentalists and go through a rigorous rehearsal schedule in order to perfect a performance of their material to play live. At this stage their training on hardware sampling workstation synthesisers will prove to be of great benefit as they will be able to integrate synthetic and sampled sounds into their live band performance.
