Arches Brick Award 2013: Call for submissions

Thu 21 Mar - Mon 15 Jul 2013

The Arches is the leading provider in Scotland for support to emergent artists and performance practitioners. We currently run the annual Behaviour International Festival of Live Performance, the Platform 18 Award (in collaboration with the Traverse Theatre), the Artist in Residence and Company in Residence programmes, our annual festival of brave new work Arches LIVE, and other mentoring schemes and professional development projects.

The Arches Brick Award is an opportunity for an emergent performance company or artist from this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe to re-stage their piece at the Arches in 2014, offering funding towards the costs of restaging the work.

Eligibility criteria

• Companies must be able to re-stage the production for two – five performances on the basis of the award.
• Performances will take place at the Arches theatre at an agreed date before end of July 2014.
• Companies will receive additional non-financial support from the Arches in terms of marketing and technical support, rehearsal space, use of fully equipped theatre space, etc.
• Companies are also welcome to supplement the award with any other funding initiatives.
• Arches Theatre would retain all box office income for these re-staged performances.
• Companies can apply from any corner of the globe.
• It must be a new piece of work or a radical re-staging of an existing text. We are looking for an experimental, risk-taking and bold approach to the exploration of new theatrical languages. This is a performance award, including dance and physical theatre as well as text-based work.
• Because this is an award for emergent talent, applications will only be considered from companies or artists who have produced no more than three shows to date.
• We will make every effort to view the productions from all applicants but reserve the right not to view work if we feel that it does not fall strictly within our eligibility criteria.

Judging panel

The panel will be headed by Jackie Wylie, Arches Artistic Director and Louise Irwin, Arches Programme Producer. Other panelists will include specialists associated with the Arches with a particular knowledge of the type of work we are seeking to promote. The award will be presented as part of the Scotsman Fringe First Award ceremony towards the end of August.
