Sarah Amy Fishlock documents the out of season hush of Scotland’s coasts.

Certain motifs are repeated in seaside areas all over the world: the promenade and the pier, the fast food stalls and the funfair. The beach amusements in oil-rich Aberdeen are as bereft of geographical identity as the archaic lido in tired Inverclyde. The aesthetic language of fun is bright colours, bold signage; an uncomfortable joviality. In the absence of their target audience, these areas are difficult to contextualise, their mise-en-scenes as incomprehensible and outdated to the urban eye as the golden age of seaside holidays that they recall.

Sarah Amy Fishlock graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in June 2011 with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communication (Photography). Her work has been exhibited at venues including V&A London and the Scottish Parliament. She is based in Glasgow and is represented by Millennium Images.
