Gretchen Peters // Lynne Hanson

Sun 4 Mar 2012 | 7pm | £16 + bf

Grammy-nominated American singer-songwriter Gretchen Peters comes to the Arches, Glasgow, with support from Lynne Hanson.

Peters began playing music as a teenager, performing in the Boulder, Colorado folk circuit. Inspired by the new generation of songwriters rising out of Nashville, she relocated there in the late 80s, making music in the same city as the likes of Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith and Rodney Crowell.

It was Martina McBride’s 1995 recording of Peters’ Independence Day which made her a songwriting sensation, winning Country Music Association’s Song Of The Year as well as being nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Song. A string of great vocalists followed suit, and began to record Peters’ songs – Pam Tillis, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Neil Diamond, George Strait, Etta James…

She describes her latest album Hello Cruel World, released in January, as her “most close-to-the-bone work, written at a time when I felt absolutely fearless about telling the truth”. Featuring guest Rodney Crowell, the album’s organic story-telling is supported as ever by Peters’ honeyed vocals and the spare, evocative sounds of her voice and guitar.

Support comes in the form of one of the most captivating female singer-songwriters on the Americana scene today, Lynne Hanson. Blessed with a soulful voice that’s been compared to Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams and Mary Chapin Carpenter, her rootsy mix of country, blues and folk has been enamouring critics across the world since debut release Things I Miss in 2006, continuing the trend with her latest album, Once the Sun Goes Down.
