Seattle duo Shabazz Palaces are, to an extent, still shrouded in mystery. Although fans now know that it’s led by Ishmael Butler (aka Palaceer Lazaro, aka Butterfly, one third of jazz-rap group Digable Planets) and multi-instrumentalist Tendai ‘Baba’ Maraire, their tracks still retain something you can’t quite put your finger on – in our age of information, there’s no context, no background, just the music.

Two self-released EPs in 2009, Shabazz Palaces and Of Light, marked a different kind of rap. Tracks followed their own patterns and structures, shifting the formula and replacing it with nothing, just improvisation and spontaneity. In some ways elements of both the Wu Tang Clan and DJ Shadow are present, but they’re re-cemented. Rhymes are thoughtful and sharp, and the beats are blissful, then stuttering, then reminiscent of something from ’92…

The first ever hip hop act to be snapped up by Sub Pop, they released their debut full length album Black Up last year to a building excitement. Join us for the pair’s hotter-than-hot debut Glasgow show.

Support comes from one of the city’s most distinctive hip hop duos, Hektor Bizerk with their sparse, bold combination of live drumming and Scottish-flavoured rap.
