Welcome to CULTURE 2014 at THE ARCHES!
In the summer that the world comes to Glasgow, The Arches is proud to present a celebration of live performance, featuring thought-provoking local artists as they tackle themes which resonate throughout the global community.
Our artistic programme launches officially on Wednesday 2nd July at 5.30pm with a drinks reception and a performance by The Arches Community Choir in the Foyer. We do hope you’ll come along to join the party, followed by Lou Prendergast’s Blood Lines and Drew Taylor’s 44 Stories.
Throughout the rest of our summer season you’ll get the chance to see Endurance; our striking new co-production with A Moment’s Peace and The Women’s Creative Company, which looks at women in sport through history. Random Accomplice’s hilarious News Just In! will be providing the laughs and Robert Softley is set to debut his inspiring Tell Me What Giving Up Looks Like. We’re also proud to play host to Surge Festival with a variety of cabaret performances in August and, later in the year, Rosana Cade’s Lady Fingers and Empire Biscuits.
Our performance programme is complemented by a fantastic season of music- particular highlights including Ghostface Killah (Wu-Tang Clan), reggae/dancehall legend Rodigan (with support from Mungo’s HiFi) and a musical celebration of Mandela Day.
The Arches Cafe Bar and foyer will be a real hub during the festival, with pop-up performances, visual art exhibits, restaurant makeovers and a themed market menu. Tying in with the spirit of Welcome, we’ll be hosting events as part of Refugee Week Scotland 2014 throughout June. You can also catch the games live on-screen and make use of free charging facilities to keep your mobiles, laptops and tablets juiced up throughout.
We are thrilled to be part of the official programme of Culture 2014 for the XX Commonwealth Games. It’s a landmark year for Glasgow and we at The Arches could not be more excited to celebrate this with audiences old, new, local and international.
