Tigerstyle Creative Music Making Programme

Scottish Bhangra production outfit Tigerstyle team up with The Arches to host a schedule of classes with a unique focus on contemporary urban music, allowing young people to express themselves while developing skills using new technology.

The programme will equip participants with a basic knowledge and understanding of music making while also encouraging them to develop an appreciation for the wide range of musical genres that make use of the various compositional and recording skills that will be taught. They will be encouraged to develop their own individual musical talents while also being urged to increase their appreciation for the skills of other individuals in a group based setting.

Participants will engage in a series of clear and simple modules that provide instruction in how to operate various types of computer software commonly associated with the production of urban/electronic music and general music recording. Instruction will be given in basic music principles, audio theory and editing, loop-based production, development & understanding of MIDI and computer based composition, sequencing, multi-tracking, mixing and integrated DJ performance. The programme will also cover music business and rights management, enlightening participants on how income can be generated from the exploitation of their musical works through the various forms of licensing that exist.

Young people between 14 and 25 are encouraged to become involved with this free project supported by the Scottish Arts Council Youth Music Initiative. It is felt that those currently studying in 4th or 5th year at school would benefit greatly from this project as it would allow them to interact with technology in a creative way that may not be available to them in the school environment. The programme is designed in such a way that it will be taught using easily affordable and accessible equipment and software so that participants may be able to replicate the set up being used in their home environment or be able to purchase such equipment in due course.
