From urban music production to the Arches’ Community Choir, the Arches is a site for broad new learning experiences
Over the past year, we’ve been working with a diverse group of over 55s in Govanhill to make a film. Working with many different individuals, including the Circle Of Friends group, we’ve been interviewing them about their experiences of living in the area – and, in particular, about Govanhill baths. Having closed down ten years ago, it has remained a central hub for the community – so much so that there’s now a campaign to reopen them.
This photoshoot, involving a proactive group of women from the Circle Of Friends group, photographer Colin Gray and the project’s co-facilitator, Adrian Howells, was part of book we’re now making as a spin-off of the project. The theme was kitsch seaside holidays, and was meant to be a visual document of the experiences of the women. Often when working with older people, it’s easy to veer towards the abstract or nostalgic, putting the elderly in a place where they don’t have responsibility for the changing face of society. By doing this, we’re reminding them that they voted, they played their part; they contributed to how things are now.
The full set of photos from the shoot are here. The film is now finished, and we’re preparing for a public showing soon, so keep your eyes out for details!
