Will Be (2010)

Playing with the performative aspects of language and the dynamic relation between form and content, ‘the future will be confusing’ is spelled out in neon letters of different colours.

As with Etchells‘ other neon pieces, Will Be draws on the artists’ fascination with the speed, clarity and vividness with which language communicates narrative, image and ideas, and at the same time its amazing propensity to create a rich field of uncertainty and ambiguity.

Fight Posters (2012)

An absurd series of imaginary fights, contexts or competitions. Whether underscoring unresolved conflicts in the social and political sphere, replaying stereotypical media rivalries or simply creating violent competition in places where one might least expect to find it, Etchells‘ lurid poster works form a playful invitation to imagine, summoning a series of virtual performances through text alone.
