Legendary soul singer Ben E. King comes to the Arches, Glasgow on Sun 15th April for an evening of heart-breaking, arms-waving soul and R&B music, including his own hits such as Stand By Me, Spanish Harlem and Don’t Play That Song (I Lied) as well as Drifters classics – On Broadway, Under the Boardwalk, Up on The Roof and more.

With one of the most elegant baritones in the history of soul music, Ben E. King is probably best known today for his much-loved hit Stand By Me – one of the most famous and distinctive tracks in the history of pop.

From his modest doo wop roots in Harlem, the now legendary singer and songwriter was propelled to worldwide success as a member of The Drifters before pursuing a solo career – his lifelong dream – in 1960. Huge hits followed – Spanish Harlem, Don’t Play That Song (You Lied), I Who Have Nothing and, of course Stand By Me, re-released in 1986 and shooting to the top of the charts after being used as the title track in Rob Reiner’s now cult film of the same name.

With this year marking the 50th anniversary of Don’t Play That Song! – the 1962 album which really put him in the spotlight – King will be performing only a couple of dates in London and Glasgow exclusively, with tracks including:

STAND BY ME
SPANISH HARLEM
DON’T PLAY THAT SONG (I LIED)
HOW SWEET IT IS
ON BROADWAY
UNDER THE BOARDWALK
UP ON THE ROOF

In the words of the late Ahmet Ertegun, former head of Atlantic records: “Ben E. King is one of the greatest singers in the history of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. His style and the tempo of his voice have a magic all their own.”

Support comes from Siobhan Wilson.
