The Magic Band, the wildly influential rotating ensemble of musicians playing with legendary artist, poet, musician and songwriter Captain Beefheart, are widely known as one of the seminal purveyors in psychedelia and hippie counterculture – as well as a solid rhythm and blues band, combining elements of free jazz, blues and rock.

Forming in California, the band were active between 1965 and 1982, the concept being that Captain Beefheart had magic powers and, upon drinking a Pepsi, could summon up “His Magic Band” to appear and perform behind him.

The band, who were responsible for piecing together much of the music from Beefheart’s notoriously impressionistic directions and commands, reformed in 2003, prompted by a request from Simpsons creator Matt Groening to play at the ATP festival he was curating. After touring and disbanding, they reformed again in 2011 for the Jeff Mangum-curated ATP.

With current members spanning all different period of The Magic Band’s history, the show comprises key tracks throughout the band’s career; mainly drawn from Clear Spot and Trout Mask Replica, much of the latter is performed as instrumentals, allowing the intricacy of the music to be fully appreciated.
