Don’t Go Without Your Life Map

Where are you heading?

A map has different roads that lead to a certain destination. Let’s just say you wake up one morning and decide that you want to go to New York City but don’t know how to get there from North Carolina. What do you do? You go on your laptop and type in “map quest” to see how long it will take and the directions on how to get there. Once you find out the ETA and how to get to NYC, you get ready and head out the door.

It easy to find out how to get to a specific location by looking up the directions and making sure you follow these directions to get to your destination. We understand this concept when it comes to road trips but only a few of us understand this concept when it comes to our journey through life. The decisions and choices that you make on a daily basis are the turns that you would take if you were to be going to NYC. If you take the wrong road or make a wrong turn, what do you do? You have to turn back and make sure you’re on route to NYC.

This is the same when it comes to your life map. If you make a poor decision in life, you can either continue to go on the “wrong road” and never reach your destination or make a U-turn and get back on track.

The decision is yours to make.

What happens when you don’t have a Life Map?

With so many distractions and temptations in this world, it’s easy to turn onto the wrong road and stay on this road for a very long time.  Without a clear life map, you’ll continue to make poor decisions in your life and eventually live a life that is unfulfilling and unsatisfying. All of us want to feel in control and that every aspect of our life is working in sync with one another. When our life seems like it’s all over the place and we’re not getting anywhere in life, we feel unhappy and worthless.

Life is too precious to waste. When you continue to take the wrong road in life,  you are wasting precious time and energy. You will be easily influenced by others and society’s standard of living.

Bring your life map!

Oprah does a great job giving you a step-by step guideline to creating your own life map. When you have a clear life map, you’ll know which turns to take and which to avoid.  A life map helps define who you are and the values that you live by on a daily basis.

If you need help creating a life map, reflect and answer the following questions:

  • What are your deepest values and beliefs in life?
  • Reflecting upon these values, what is your purpose in living?
  • What roles in your life are most meaningful to you?

These questions will help you focus in on what is important in your life. When creating a life map, you must know clearly the direction you are heading.
