When we think of names for sports like The Beautiful Game, we tend to focus on the matches. The interplay of the competitors, their skills and predictions, and their intense athleticism all play parts, but they’re only painting a portion of the picture. As gardening enthusiasts, we go a step beyond, looking at the pitch as another expression of the highest level of a sport.

Having cared for many personal lawns in our lives, this made us wonder. What exactly goes into preparing the pitch for a world-class level football event, and is it possible to take some of these lessons back home?

Premier League Kick-Off and the Unsung Heroes

While many aspects of pitch preparation are common across different sports, the Premier League deserves a special mention as the new season gets underway. As one of the most watched sporting competitions in the world, it draws massive attention from fans, pundits, and casual viewers alike.

With kick-off just around the corner, speculation is already running high about who might lift the trophy next May. Current Premier League 2025/2026 betting odds suggest Liverpool remain strong favourites, with Arsenal and Man City also tipped to challenge for the top spot.

However, beyond these football odds, and the spotlight placed on players and managers, the tireless work of the groundsmen who ensure every pitch is in perfect condition for the tournament, can easily be overlooked. Prepping the Pitch

Work on the pitch has traditionally been a more behind-the-scenes kind of thing, but this has changed recently, with extra attention being paid to the hard work committed by pitch staff. One of the most illustrative examples of this comes from celebrations of the Grounds Team. The Grounds Team of the Season award has become a major point of pride in recent years, with Manchester United taking home the highest number of wins yet.

The actual work on the pitch begins with the basic elements that almost every lawn owner understands intuitively. This means regular mowing at a consistent length, which helps ensure the ball is always predictable and visible. Moving frequency also changes based on the season and the speed of the grass growth, combined with special mowers that can protect the grounds and help aerate the soil.

Irrigation in the UK is also a significant concern, where the team needs to ensure a perfect moisture balance, especially during play. Too dry and the ground becomes too hard, too wet and the grass becomes muddy and slippery.

The type of grass used can vary between sports and fields. Traditionally, the main types include Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. Not all of these pitches are entirely natural, however, with the likes of Manchester United’s Old Trafford and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium including what is called a Desso GrassMaster hybrid grass. This approach reinforces the natural plant life with injected fibres, which maintain the stability of the surface to enable longer playing time.

While we’re sure many more of the specifics are kept close to the Grounds Team’s chests, the fundamentals of looking after a world-class sports pitch aren’t that different from what we do at home. They have a bigger staff fully dedicated to the field, and some high-tech backup to support play, but otherwise, the idea is something we could feasibly follow at home. As for the cost, well, maybe you might have to take up a football career if you’re serious about achieving this level of quality.
