The newer American fridge freezers come with the auto defrost feature so you don’t have to do anything manually. However, some model doesn’t have the feature and that’s for this article is all about.

Why do you need to Defrost your American Fridge Freezer?

If there is a lot of ice build-up in your fridge then it will cause it to work very inefficiently and it will not be able to cool as per its maximum capacity. It will also cause the temperature to rise gradually. What happens is the ice build-up is sometimes so thick that the fan is not able to pull the air properly in order to cool it.

Let us give you a better explanation for this so you can understand this easily. Air has moisture in it and each time we open the freezer door the moisture condenses and freezes inside. When the ice build-up to a certain thickness level it will simply act as an insulating barrier which reduces the efficiency in the fridge.

In an extreme situation, it might cause the door to stuck and you have to apply a force that will cause it to break from some corners. It can also cause the body of the fridge to break due to expansion. If you don’t defrost your freezer for so long you will notice a lot of ice buildup on all sides until there is no space left to put anything else inside.

When should you Defrost your American Fridge Freezer?

American fridge freezer should be defrosted to maintain its efficiency. For instance, you should defrost it each time there is a quarter-inch of ice build-up on the interior walls. Many people defrost it once a year but twice is year is something that most of us prefer.

Well, in the end, it actually depends on how often you use the freezer. You can also stretch the time between each defrost by minimizing the time you open the freezer door. A better way is to keep a list of what’s inside so you don’t have to open it each time.

How to Defrost Samsung American Style Fridge Freezer

Let’s start by unplugging the fridge freezer from the power supply and opening the freezer door. Now remove all the drawers and ice tray and put them away also locate the drainage hose in your refrigerator. It is usually located at the bottom of your freezer. You don’t have to do anything, simply wait for the ice to melt itself.

You can also put a dry cloth or newspaper on the floor to prevent it from getting wet. Meanwhile, the ice is melting it’s the perfect time to clean the drawers and the ice tray. Simply run them under hot water and get rid of the ice buildup. Once they are cleaned simply let them dry under the sun.

Before turning the refrigerator back on, ensure that everything is dried up and there is no water left inside the freezer or the drawer. In case there is water then get rid of it otherwise it will freeze up again and you have to do the process once again.

This is the easiest and simplest way you can defrost your refrigerator. Now let’s check out some other ways where you can simply use some household appliances and make the process even quicker.

Using a Hairdryer

To melt the ice much quicker you can simply use a hairdryer, yes you heard it right. As long as you take proper precautions it is fine. Pick up a hairdryer and set it on full settings and blast the hot air through the freezer door and you will see all the ice melting quickly. Make sure the wire doesn’t come in contact with the water.

Using a Fan

Other than a hairdryer you can use another household appliance such as a small fan to get the job done. It doesn’t matter if it’s cold or hot inside simply use the fan and propel air inside so the ice can melt at a much faster rate.

Use a Cloth and Hot Water

Take a cloth and dip it into hot water and clean away the ice. This is not as effective as some of the other methods we have listed above but it is very safe and gets the job done.

So, when all the ice is removed the next thing you have to do is to clean all the interior and guide all the water to the drainage hole. You should dry everything including drawers, trays, and walls inside the freezer. Once everything is done your Samsung American fridge freezer will be looking just like new and start working again at its full efficiency.

I have a 3 yr old Samsung American style fridge / freezer.

Its been fine until 3 days ago. The freezer now makes a very loud noise most of the time – a bit like being on a building site – – I have a hunch its the fan which circulates the air, but I am no technician.

The only way to stop the noise t is to open the door.

Could it be that it needs defrosting? I came across your website today while trying to find out how to fix this.

I could not find anything that resembles a drainage hose, anywhere !!?? So Im perplexed HELP! any ideas please?
